Looks like something's up. See the EMERGENCY PLAN thread at the top of the 1/18 and 1/32 scale forums. We may need to work quickly as i have no idea how long the board will be up for.

Everyone write it down as this forum could disappear at any time, you'll have to register with Ezboard in order to post.
Once you get on and registered - leave a post to let everyone you made it to the temp board.

Aferg, will you be 'saving' this forum? If we can find someone to host this board on their website,we could transfer the whole lot. Or maybe we could all take up a collection and buy our own domain /website package.
We could get a real neat setup for about 60 bucks a year like www.rctankhq.com which comes with PHPBB and allows you to convert other forums to PHPBB. Also, we'd have lots of webspace for photos, maybe even incorporate Grunt's archives, have sections for customs, even blogs.
If we made it say $1 or $2 for membership , that could give these people access to a special 'members area, maybe even the trading area; the rest of the site/board would be free access. Extra dough could be raised by advertising, and some dough could be put back into the hobby by offering prizes for competitions.
At the moment, this central point of our hobby is at the 'mercy', for want of a better word , of only 1 or 2 people, if they go awol or get sick or die, it's all over for us.
So I thought I'd offer these thoughts as I was one of the guys who helped set up RC Tank HQ, and put in place measures to ensure it's continuity. We'd need to elect a committee to make decisions, some bylaws etc, but it's not too hard, then we could all be assured of a permanent resource for the hobby.

yes Grunt1 told me that too......unfortunately i'm not the Admin...P-51 is and only he can do that.

However, it looks like the domain name is being renewed by its owner and our home will be saved.

I have the emergency HQ bookmarked just in case. I wondered if it was time to make some donations again. I know we had to do so for GP back in the day. Sounds like, that won't be necessary.

Time to send in the troops to look for P51 since he has been on patrol for quite a while.

I wasn't able to get on this site from the morning through the afternoon. I just got on now. Talking with another boardmember via e-mail, he noted that there were no problems for him the whole day. Wierd, though I must say that per an above post, I was beginning to suffer from FWD (Forum Withdrawl Disorder)

it probably just depended when individuals would attempt to log on. The board seemed to be active on and off for about 20 minutes at a time.

All seems well now, the domain has been renewed.

Grunt1 wants to hold a council re: moving this board to a new location. What does everyone think of that? Premature or a good idea?

I think it's a good idea to at least talk it over. :D

"We need to talk to Britt before anything......"

I totally agree and am trying damn hard to do that right now. But.. The point is that the site shut off today and without the extraordinary effort on the part of several members to bring it back, odds were good that it wasn't coming back.

We all hope that Britt will return and I believe he will, but even he will tell you that the way things are set up today he is a single point of failure (and a busy person).

SSHQ could just as easily turn off tomorrow, be hacked, corrupt database, whatever and it would be gone, gone gone...

Until today's efforts we had no control of this host.. at all.. Andrew has done a fantastic job as moderator but his powers (today) are extremely limited when it comes to server, domain and phpbb level issues.

If not, what TankDuel and I are requesting is for more members get involved in the form of a council. In addition to Britt, in place of Britt (if he has lost interest), either way it needs to be done.

This works for many other forums. It also allows for more than one person to be an admin, be able to renew the hosting agreement, renew the domain name, etc.. So if someone is busy, finds other interests, or otherwise MIA we are not lost.

You got a taste today of something we've all been lucky hasn't happened sooner and that what happened today was fixable. Ever been on a forum that lost it's database? ouch..

Aferg and Teamski are moderators with enhanced access to this board. I'm not that tech-savy in regards to forum hosting, but is there a way P-51 could share the critical information with them so that if this board shuts down again, they can bring it back up?

I like the sound of a "council" of moderators... If the forum leaders (Aferg & P-51) decided to go with this route, I'd be willing to help! I post here often enough and would like to contribute in some way shape or form.

I'm here to help in anyway I can as well. I don't want to see this great place go down either.

If it comes to a monetary contribution to keep the forum alive, I'm in.

Whatever it takes.
