In THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, scientists and US Air Force personnel at the North Pole discover a crashed flying saucer and its pilot frozen in the ice. After recovering the frozen alien pilot, some of the scientists wanted to thaw it out so they could communicate with the advanced being. However, Dr. Chapman, played by 6' 6" John Dierkes, persuaded them that thawing the alien might release deadly alien bacteria that could threaten mankind. Dierkes got the role of Dr. Chapman after originally auditioning for The Thing, but the role went to James Arness, who was 6' 7" and bigger than Dierkes.
Ironically, years later, Dierkes reunited with Arness when he appeared in three episodes of Arness' hit Western tv series, GUNSMOKE.
