Panzer IV armour shrouding ???

Question reguarding the Panzer IV.
The 21st C version, both long and short barreled models both have that armoured shroud around the turret. Was this correct, or just on some versions, or

I don't care for it myself, but want to be sure that if I remove it, it won't wreck the model(I know how to remove it physically). I will be removing the turret on a couple to make a whirbelwind wind or two, but on the main long barreled version, wasn't there no shrouding ??? The General

the short barreled version rarely if ever had the turret armour and you should remove it if you want it to look more accurate. The long barreled versions were often seen with the turret armour.

Both the long barrel 75mm gun turrets and the shorty 75mm turrets are correct both with and without the extra armor "skirts" around the turrets and hanging over the treads. Both are authentic....same is true for the storage boxes on the rear of the turret. With and without depends on the model and the year you are representing. I prefer the tanks without the extra armor and w/o the storage boxes....of course dig around for pics and you can probably find anything you want to represent...Nothing was set in stone, in wartime.

I have never seen an authentic pic of a Panzer MkIV "sawed off" or "shorty" w/ "kampf schürzen" , shielding it's tracks or a turret girdle ,.. but have on the long-barrel w/ 75mm.

Perhaps someone will provide us pics of one , cause I'd like to see it.

TTT, are you talking about the Panzer III N? At a quick glance, it looks fairly similar to the Panzer IV Ausf. D, but I have never seen an Ausf. D with Schurzen armor.

there were some pIVE's that had turret armour, but only a few and none of them were in dark grey, that i've ever seen.

The most typical short barrel PIV is without any turret armour. You can leave it on for the long barrel PIV, however.

I concede..... after searching 757 images of Panzer IV's, both long and short barrel, I cannot find any pics of short barrel "IV"'s with schurzen armor. An absolute ton of images of the long barrel tanks, both with and without the schurzen armor, but my favorite, the "shorty" is seen without the schurzen.........maybe it's shown in that 758th pic......

With the driver's armor plate being straight across, the earliest model the 21C tank can accurately represent is the F1. Up through the Ausf E, that armor plate was staggered as seen from above. The radio operator's side was set back in comparison. As for the F1, I am not aware of it ever having a a turret skirt.

I've removed the armour shielding from the turret and the tool box as well. I like the look of the short barrel now better

What I will do with the others is ??? I'm also working on the Turret for the first Whirblewind, so one of the tanks will be losing it's turret for sure. THe question now is, what will I use for the quad AA cannons

An idea has come to mind that the US quad set up(less some parts) might be the ticket to use with some modifications to the barrels and ammo cans. Not sure yet, but I'll save it for a different thread on the kitbash

the US quad .50's are quite a bit smaller than a 20mm flakvierling....like half the size, so i don't know how good using it for a wirbelwind would look. Ballpoint pen refills are about the right diameter for 20mm barrels.....that might be a good place to start.

I know I have some brass tubing here somewhere that I used to use as steam lines when building the 1/29th steam locos. I'll have to find some good pictures of the wirbelwind to go off of. Thanks, the General
