Is the BBI Corsair Worth the Purchase?

I know this topic has already been extensively covered and has its own thread somewhere, but all thats needed is a quick review :)

BBI Corsairs have been sitting on the shelves at my local TRUs for some time now; still at full price. Each time I see the plane, I get more and more tempted to get one. The cockpit looks fantastic and the paint job, while fictitious, looks great. I already have the origional 21c Kepford Corsair and Boyington Corsair, which, though they lack the cool cockpit, figure, and other minor details, still are excellent replicas of the Corsair.

Some have said the BBI Corsair is the best WWII plane yet, and others have disagreed. Then there were all the QC issues with the loose flaps, weak landing gear, propeller, and so on. So, what I want to know is the BBI Corsair really worth the near $50 purchase?

Looks like you've already given your own review....and only you can determine if it's worth the money to you.

In my opinion, all the BBI and 21c planes are a bargain at twice the price (but don't tell them that :wink: ).
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

I agree, that much airplane for $50 bucks BARGAIN.
Look at paying $50 for a decent 1/48 or average 1/32 plastic kit nic paint glue etc.
Personally I like BBI more than 21c but they are both improving.
BBI just sent me pics of their new "green" zero and new corsair "marines dream".
21c is shortly releasing "pappy's" corsair so I'd say go ahead, buy it, enjoy it and challenge yourself if you want to add your own detailing.

HELL YES!!! It is the best looking 1:18 plane made IMHO. I have it on my desk and I can't keep my eyes off of it. It just looks so right...... Get it!

It is top ranked. One of the best ever done in 1/18 scale for mass distribution. It also has some cool inside features which you will discover upon getting one. It's right up there with the Spitfire, Starfighter, Mustang and Lightning.

Like all of 1/18 scale, there are things that could be better. However, you do need to have this in your inventory. After all, there are Zero's to contend with ...

Buy it Tman. If you don't like it, I'll buy it from you. Definately a must have. It looks a lot better put together than it does in the box. The rest of the guys are correct in saying the detail is excellent. 8)

Absolutely agree with all of you gentlemen; it's a must have!

One of my favorite features is the pilot himself. I remember reading somehere on the forum that BBi is unbeatable when it comes to its pilots, and I totally agree with that impression.

As for my favorite feature of them all: The gorgeous blonde on the nose.

If you decide to buy one, and have a few to choose from, take a close look at the nose art. Some are printed with off-center color registration, and that makes a big difference in the appearance of the girl.

I dont think its a fictitious paint scheme, thats a typical 1943 scheme and Im sure Ive seen a Corsair named Marines Dream in a book or online in a picture somewhere. What I dont like are the rockets. Oh and I wish I had the problem some of you have as far as finding planes goes, I live in Green Bay, TRU ZERO planes since they sold their last D-Day P38 over a year ago. The 2 WMs,one has had the same 190 and 109E nightfighter( was there actually a 109E nightfighter, never seen one) for over 2 years, the other had 190s only, then no more 1.18 scale after that.

Thanks for all your kind comments! This thread got alot more responses than I thought it would. Anyways, I picked up a BBI Corsair at one of the TRUs in my area, and chose the best painted of the three they had. All I can say is wow :shock: This really is an awesome WWII plane. Its now my third Corsair, already having the origional 21c Kepford Corsair and the Boyington Corsair. While I will always have a very special place in my heard for the Boyington plane, the detail on this one simply blows away any of 21c's recent Corsair efforts. Not only is the paint job sweet, but then there's all the moving control surfaces, the cockpit figure and ordinance. Well worth the price! Thanks again for convincing me to get yet another plane!

I'm glad you went ahead and got the BBI Corsair. I have four 21C Corsairs and finally went ahead and got the BBI version, and don't regret it. Both have their share of good points. The detail on the BBI Corsair is great, but to me, all the details don't really add up to a better model. IMHO, the BBI Zero is a better replication of the original than the BBI Corsair. (I don't have the P-51, so don't know about that one)

IMHO (again), I have a slight preference to the 21C Corsair, it just has a better overall impression to me. I'm going to glue the flaps on my BBI version in the take-off position (and maybe even rob the tail and main gear from one of my 21C versions) The BBI canopy is far superior, notice the relative thin-ness of the clear material compared to the 21C canopy.

Bottom line, I like both, for different reasons.

I just purchased my Corsair and am pretty happy with it. I'm glad i read this post. The flaps aren't as bad as everyone says they are. you just pull them out a bit and they go up and down pretty smoothly, then you just push them in to lock them. basically the P51 has the same flaps. my landing gear doors have a tendecy to come loose but no biggy. The interior is awesome for detail. I was reading my plane books last night and saw what controls do what. the prop spins just perfect and doesn't flop around. the fix for it is to just spread the clips a bit and it'll make it spin better. one thing thats a pain is the tail wheel drag wire thing. i had to push the clips together to get the wire thing to stay on. also the one great thing the corsair does is the folding wings. much better then the crappy 21c corsair. it left a bad taste in my brothers mouth when i told him i'm getting a corsair. his broke so many times. its very hard to pull it apart and push it back in again. i'm sure over time it'll get better. its very highly detailed. So yes for anyone that wants to get one. GET IT!!! i believe i said everything that theres to say.
